BA (Hons)Teaching English toSpeakers of Other Languages
The one-year BA (Hons) Teaching Englishto Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)provides you with opportunities to learnabout language skills as well as grammar,vocabulary, pronunciation and functions.
You will gain an understanding of how speakers ofother languages than English learn, and should betaught, this language.
As part of the course you will complete a dissertationwhere you will undertake research about a morespecialist English language theme, such as Languageand Culture, English Language for Science andTechnology, Business Language, or Language andResources for Younger Learners.
On graduation, if you can demonstrate strong CEFR C1language skills, (Council of Europe Common EuropeanFramework of Reference for Languages), you may havethe option to apply to study the Cambridge Certificatein Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA). This is a sought-after professional qualificationfor teachers of English as a foreign language.

> Practise teaching English to speakers ofother languages
> Undertake a research project on aspecialist English language theme
> Upon graduating, if you demonstratestrong CEFR C1 language skills, youmay study towards the internationallyrecognisedCambridge CELTA teachingqualification.
This programme is aimed at anybody who hasa strong interest in the English language and inteaching it to speakers of other languages.
Graduate destinations include continuationon the Cambridge CELTA or MA in TESOL,or working abroad in a range of TESOLcontexts, where there are rich and varied workopportunities for our graduates.The University will offer specific guidance andsupport regarding employment in this field.

1、Language and Learning – Focus on Literacy
This module helps you improve your knowledge andunderstanding of reading and writing skills, along withknowledge of grammatical and functional systemswhich underpin English language learning.
It enables you to develop organisational and editingskills for writing, notice grammatical language featuresand analyse them effectively to support languagedevelopment in specific contexts.
2、Language and Learning – Focus on OralSkills
Discover how listening and speaking skills aredeveloped by speakers of other languages thanEnglish. Gain specific knowledge and understandingof lexical and phonologicalystems which underpinthe English language.This module enables you to develop language skillsfor listening, as well as fluency and accuracy forspeaking. You are expected tomprove your abiltyto notice lexical and key phonological features ofEnglish, which are analysed in specific languagedevelopment contexts.
3、Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
This module provides you with an historical contextin which to consider modern approaches to teachingEnglish to speakers of other languages (TESOL).Yougain practical knowledge of learning and teachingina TESOL context, covering areas such as classroommanagement, planning, delivery and assessment.Planning Research in TESOL
Develop your understanding of the place andimportance of research in the field of education,inparticular in a TESOL context. This module enablesyou to develop skills to evaluate current researchpapers and to make judgements about them and itprepares you for the Individual TESOL Project module.
4、Individual TESOL Project
Define and work on your own research topic overan extended period of time. You can specialise in aparticular area of interest related to TESOL. Relevantthemes for thisdissertation module include: Languageand Culture, English for Science and Technology,Business English, and Language and Resources forYounger Learners.
Entry requirements for this course arenormally one of the following:
> Level 5 or equivalent in any subject
> Foundation Degree in any subject
> HND or equivalent in any subject
>Successful completion of two years in Higher Education, in any subject, with 120 ECTS(or equivalent).
For non-native speakers of English, there is anIELTS 6.0 English language entry requirementwith no individual band below 5.5.
